Introducing: My Love Tote

I feel like I need to begin by sharing how this all came about. This whole idea just hit me one day while I was at work. Has this ever happened to you? It was kind of like one of those “eureka!” moments. Anyways, if you’ve worked retail before, you’ll understand how dead it is this time of year. I think our busiest time of year begins after Thanksgiving or around Black Friday, and then ends December 31st. January and February are just painfully slow months. It’s a ghost town. We’ve been going a little crazy trying to find things to keep us busy, but there’s only so much that we can do. I’m the kind of person that always has to be doing something or I feel like time is being wasted. So in these types of scenarios, I just put my brain to work. Valentine’s Day was coming up and I needed a new crochet project. I also wanted to create something cute and original to share on my Instagram. One of my co-workers was working on a balaclava made of granny squares and that inspired me to want to make something out of granny squares as well. That’s when it hit me: granny squares with hearts in the center!!! How romantic! Now I didn’t want another balaclava and I had just finished making my skinny rainbow scarf, so I decided to make the obvious (for a bag-obsessed queen): a tote bag.

I don’t think you’ll find someone as obsessed with bags as I am. If I had all the money in the world, I’d have so many bags. I mean, I already have a lot of bags. But I would most definitely have all the bags I’ve ever dreamed of! I’d have a room just for all of my purses!!! (I’m getting all giddy just thinking about it ha-ha) One thing that I love about crocheting is that it allows me to create my own bags. I never thought I’d be able to make my own, but I’ve made 3 different designs already! When planning my “love tote”, I was already confident that I have the skills to make whatever I put my mind to. So I took the closest piece of paper that I could find while I was at work (because I didn’t wanna lose my idea/vision), and I drew some ideas with our coloured permanent markers. (I just want to quickly add that I’m a hard worker (not a slacker!), love my job, and this didn’t take more than 10min – I promise! Zero customers were ignored during this process lol!) Here’s how it turned out:

There are clearly a few combinations that I tried out. I knew I wanted pink, blue and yellow together, but I didn’t know how I wanted to execute it. I chose these colours based off of the street style photos that I saved from Copenhagen Fashion Week. I love how colourful they are in Copenhagen. It’s 100% my favourite week. They’re much more creative and experimental there. I find it so inspiring. Here are the photos that solidified my colour choice:

Aren’t they beautiful? I think it has to do with everything that we’ve gone through in terms of the pandemic that has made us loosen up when it comes to self expression. I think it made some of us get to know ourselves a bit more and realize that life is too short to live by certain fashion rules. Express yourself! Wear what makes you happy! Don’t wear black, wear colour! It’s just something I’ve come to notice and appreciate a lot lately. I think most fashion trends you’ll see this year will definitely express that. When doing some research, a lot of trends that were forecasted came from many different decades. You’re going to see an absolute mix of everything. Take what you love from each decade and mash it all together! For real though.

I’ll save the trend talk for another day. Let’s get back to my love tote. I made this bag in less than two days. I was so determined and inspired. I really wanted to bring one of those drawings to life. I had to learn how to crochet a heart and I’ll be honest, that almost did it for me. Like, I was ready to call it quits after trying a few times. It was so hard! And part of me was doubting that my hearts were even looking like hearts. But the more I looked at it, and the more I practiced, I got the hang of it. It finally looked like a heart, so I made 10 of them.

After all the squares were complete, it was pretty much done. I just had to attach them all together, make side panels, then attach some handles! I tried to make pink and yellow hearts at first, but the yellow yarn was a tad thicker than the pink and the blue. I was worried that with thicker yarn, the squares wouldn’t be uniform. So I put the yellow yarn aside, and just used the pink and blue. Little did I know, the yellow yarn was just what I needed for the handles. Thick yarn is probably better because it’s sturdier (I was also running out of the other colours so I had few options lol). I think yellow is just a great contrast as well. I’m really happy with that decision. Anyways, without further ado, I introduce to you… MY LOVE TOTE :))

Now I know the final result doesn’t look exactly like my original sketch, but I’m super happy with the way it turned out. I took so many photos of her. You’ll probably notice a missing charm on the final product. The crochet heart charm is still an idea I’m flirting with, and I think I’ll probably end up adding one later. It’s basically two of those hearts sewn together and stuffed with Poly-fil. If you could choose a colour for a dangly crochet heart charm on my love tote, what would you choose? Pink? Yellow? Maybe red? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comment section!

I’ve also been thinking about sharing my process with you! Would you like to see my process when making a crochet project? I always take pictures after I complete a step, so I think it’d be fun to actually lay it all out in a blog post for you. Maybe it can even help you make one of your own? It’s just a thought but I would obviously love your feedback.

Alright. That’s it, that’s all! I hope you’re all having a wonderful weekend. I’ll be spending it thrift shopping! I’m so excited because this will be the first thrift trip of the year. If I find some goodies, I’ll be sure to come back with a haul ;))

Until next time,

Balaclava Appreciation Post

On New Year’s Day, I made a balaclava from START TO FINISH! I can’t believe how easy it was! I’m super impressed with myself and how it turned out. My best friend, Jericho, gifted me this gorgeous yarn for Christmas and I knew I had to turn it into a balaclava. I’ve wanted to crochet one for a while but the yarn that I have just isn’t soft enough for something that touches so much of your face and neck. I was worried that most of it would make my face itchy but the yarn Jer got me is so soft, and just perfect. If you don’t know what a balaclava is, it’s basically a ski mask. I know they’re super trendy right now but I’ve been wanting to make one since I saw this photo from Miu Miu’s FW21 fashion show:

I just think this is so epic. Maybe I need to make a matching scarf now?

My balaclava is obviously a little different because Miu Miu’s looks more like a helmet. Maybe I’ll try to make a helmet next time? I’m in love with the one I made but I love it so much that I want to make another lol. It just turned out so well and when something you made yourself exceeds your expectations… there’s like, no better feeling! It’s a high! So I’m definitely going to make another balaclava in the future, and maybe I’ll try to find this Miu Miu helmet pattern. The pattern I followed to make my first balaclava is from Etsy. My friend, Lauren, shared a balaclava that she made on Instagram and I was obsessed. She sent me the link to this Etsy seller and I purchased it right away. I don’t use patterns very often because I find some of the wording in patterns to be a little confusing and hard to follow, but this seller’s instructions were perfect. Very cute, straightforward, and easy to follow! I highly recommend it. Here’s a link if you’d like to make one yourself: https://etsy.me/3bwIwap

Maybe my balaclava already looks like a helmet lol…

Now I know that this piece isn’t for everyone, and I’m not going to try and sell it to you or anything. But there are so many positive things I can say about my balaclava!

1. She’s gorgeous.

2. The colours are stunning (and great for hiding any makeup that rubs off my face lol)!

3. She’s WARM! I’m not even joking. It really protects you from the cold air out there.

4. It’s made of the softest yarn from my forever bestie.

5. She hides any bad hair day.

6. I feel on trend and kinda cool when I wear it.

7. She’s gorgeous.

8. It’s 100% ONE OF A KIND because I MADE IT.

9. She’s gorgeous.

10. AND I MADE IT!

I think that’s enough said, right? Speaking of making things, I think I’m back on a crochet kick. I feel inspired again after making this balaclava. It was such a great start to my year! I have so many crochet projects in mind and I can’t wait to share them all with you. I’m currently working on a mini skirt (definitely sharing when I’m finished)! And last night I finished a beanie! I made one for my boyfriend for Christmas and it turned out so well that I wanted to keep it for myself! I obviously didn’t because it was a Christmas gift. But after learning and realizing how easy it is to make a beanie, I think I’m going to play around and make beanies in all sorts of colours. I might experiment with some fuzzy yarns, too!

Me feeling mad cool in my balaclava.

If I haven’t sold you on the balaclava, I hope you still enjoyed reading this post and can at least appreciate the craftsmanship ha-ha. I’ve got a lot of ideas/projects I want to do so I’m sure I’ll make something that’ll peak your interest!

Thank you so much for reading this! Stay warm out there!!!

Until next time,

OOTD: Orange Creamsicle #TBT

Why, hello there! Did y’all think I disappeared? I feel like I basically did disappear for a bit there. And if we want to be exact, I have not uploaded a new blog post since June 26th. That’s like… A MONTH AGO?! I cannot believe how fast time has gone by. So much has happened and I’ll try my best to update y’all on most of it but honestly, the last month now seems like a blur.

Okay so, the last blog post was my birthday post and it was even a late birthday post. As of June 16th, I was back at work full-time. The adjustment (like I’ve said before) is hard. It’s still hard. I’ve mentioned a few times now that I just don’t have the stamina anymore. I mean, I’m sure it’ll come back but it’s been a month and the struggle is still real. I get SO TIRED when I work even 3 days in a row. It’s really quite sad. So yeah, work’s been hard. It’s been taking a lot out of me because with the commute I leave my place at 9AM and get home at 8PM. They’re long days that I haven’t done in over a year.

Now on top of everything, I have Never Skip a Bead. I do still plan on writing a proper introduction to our small business/brand but I want it to be some of my best writing, and my head just hasn’t been there. I don’t want to ramble like I probably am today. My head has just been drained for days on end. Never Skip a Bead is doing great though! I wish I could devote more time towards it but I need a more steady income, so I have to keep my retail job at Free People. I gotta make it work even though balancing two jobs is a lot. All I keep telling myself is that one day it will all be worth it.

I know you didn’t come here to read about my problems. Come to think of it, I’m probably making y’all stressed and I don’t mean to! I just want you to know that I’ve been very busy and in order to stay sane, I’ve had to cut back on a few things and that included blogging (unfortunately). But I’m back now! I can’t say that we’re going to be back to two posts a week but I want to try for maybe one day a week? We’ll see! I’m going to stop talking about this stuff now and get to my outfit/the reason you clicked on this blog post to begin with.

Orange creamsicles. I have not had one in ages! Did you ever have them growing up? As I’m writing this, I am making a promise to myself that I have to get a (small) box of them the next time I go grocery shopping! So nostalgic! This outfit made me think of them. The whites, peachy-pinks and oranges just scream, “An orange creamsicle in the summer!” The oversized top that I’m wearing is something I’ve worn before. I swear it’s been featured on the blog before but it could have been over a year ago. It’s a thrifted short-sleeved button up (or down?) from Talize. My boyfriend and I thrifted it. The great thing about thrifting with him is that if it doesn’t work out for him, I can wear it! Of course they’re usually pretty big on me, but I think it still works! Underneath my boyfriend’s thrifted top, I wore a simple white ribbed tank top from Free People. I don’t know if I’ve shared this with you but I have an obsession with white tank tops. You can’t go wrong with a white tank top in the summer, my friends. It’s honestly one of my wardrobe staples during this time of year. They go with everything and I’m never too hot. They’re just an all-around great layering piece for the spring/summer. They’re like winter’s black turtleneck. You know what I mean? Long story short, I have lots of these and you’ll probably see me wearing a lot of white tank tops in future outfit posts.

The shorts I’m wearing in these photos are boxers. But I think they’re boxers that are appropriate for the public? I mean, would you think they’re boxers if I hadn’t told you? They’re super breezy. Toronto has been so hot lately. I can’t have anything really touching me in this heat. These shorts are from Free People (you probably could have guessed it tbh). We didn’t carry them in-store so I ordered them from our online website. If you’d like a pair (I highly recommend them!), click here: https://www.freepeople.com/shop/sunday-morning-boxer-shorts?color=065

For accessories, I obviously wore lots of Never Skip a Bead jewelry. If you wanna see the styles that we offer (we make everything to order and can customize something for you!), check out our Instagram: @neverskipabead! Everything that I’m wearing that is made out of beads is probably something I made myself. The other bits of jewelry are some of the staples that those of you that read my blog often will recognize. I’ve got my BonBonWhims ring, my Neon Afternoon ring, my VibeSzn necklace, an Envieux Jewelry necklace, Mejuri ring, and Tiffany bracelet! If you’re new here (welcome!!!), you’ll be surprised at how much jewelry I can manage to stack all over my body ha-ha. Life’s too short! Wear it all!

On my feet are these really comfy Birkenstocks that I can’t stop wearing. I ordered them online from Urban Outfitters forever ago. I swear it was in February or March. I guess it’s kind of weird to be wearing fluffy sandals during the summer but I’m honestly not even phased by it. My feet appreciate it (especially when I’m at work!) Last but not least: my new purse. I love it so much. I ordered it for myself for my birthday from JW PEI. It’s such a gorgeous/good quality bag for $100. I think it looks pretty expensive for what it is. I’m really enjoying it. I think it fits perfectly with this orange creamsicle vibe. Honestly, just overall a perfect bag and I totally recommend!

TANK – Free People
OVERSIZED BUTTON-DOWN – Thrifted from Talize
SHORTS/BOXERS – Free People
SANDALS – Birkenstock
BAG – JW PEI
JEWELRY – Never Skip a Bead, BonBonWhims, Neon Afternoon, Envieux Jewelry, VibeSzn, Mejuri & Tiffany

That’s everything for today! I hope I’ve got you all up to speed. I know it’s been a long time since my last blog post but as you can tell, you haven’t really missed much. I’ve been super busy and tired, and doing my best to enjoy summer before it ends! I have a week of vacation coming up next month and I need ideas on how to make the best of my time off. What have you been up to? What should my boyfriend and I plan for our fourth anniversary? It’s also his birthday that week so I need to think of something special but also not too crazy/reasonably priced ha-ha. Would love to hear some ideas in the comment section below!

Thank y’all for sticking with me! Thank you for taking the time to read this!

I hope you’re having the best summer!

Until next time,

– Tiny ❤

Coin Laundry

Good morning!! I’m back with another outfit post! Hurrah! Here’s a funny story: We had a HECK OF A LOT of laundry to do during this past week (and you really don’t want me to get further into it.. *bed bugs from the apartment upstairs* HA), so I decided to get my roommate to take some pictures while we were waiting for everything to finish at the laundromat. Where were these photos taken? Yeah, they’re from directly behind the laundromat. Very classy lol.

Guyyyyss. This is what my Summer has come to. Pictures at a laundromat because I work so much and my days off are here and there. Summer is almost over! We have A MONTH left, and I feel so sad that I haven’t really had any peak moments/highlights to Summer 2017. How about you guys? Have you also found that Summer this year hasn’t been the greatest, fun-wise and weather-wise? If you’re having the best Summer of your life, that’s awesome! Have some fun for me ha-ha! But seriously, I hope this next month is a whole lot better!

I do have Wayhome Music and Art Festival to look forward to! This weekend I’ll be going to Wayhome with Topshop Topman! I am so excited because I’ve never been before, and I’m basically going FOR FREE. This will definitely be a highlight. We’ll be camping the entire weekend and there’ll be so much going on. I’ll be working for a bit of it but I get to do whatever I want for the rest of it! One of my goals while I’m there, besides having the best experience, is to vlog EVERYTHING. Well not everything, everything. I just want to share a good experience with you guys! Does that sound like a good idea? If anything, there will definitely be pictures to share and of course, a blog post.

I’m not dead!

Hey, it’s me. Yeah, I’m not dead! I didn’t fall off the face of the earth or anything like that. Life happened, but I feel much better and I’m ready to go back to doing things that make me happy. Like writing this blog!! :))

To those of you who are wondering why I haven’t written a blog post since March, it’s mainly because I went through a tough time and had to figure out who I am and what I love about myself again. Do you guys ever fall into ruts and feel like you just have zero motivation to do anything? Or just feel like nothing is worth it? It happens, and that’s life. If bad things never happened, we wouldn’t be able to appreciate all the good things. That’s all I’m going to say but I am more than glad to be back. I hope you guys are glad too!

Today’s post is a good ol’ outfit post. Weird to see my face again, huh? Ha-ha.

There really isn’t much to say about this outfit. I’m wearing all Topshop (obviously). Guys, I’ve honestly tried my best to branch out… but there isn’t a brand that fits me the same! By fit, I mean literally. Topshop also fits my style more but their Petite section gives me LIFE. I want to give a little shout-out to my shoes too though. These cute western-esque slide-on loafer thingies are so cute and have been meshing well with the rest of my wardrobe. Again, they fit me like a glove! Yay!!

OOTD: Layering Game

Hey everyone! I’m very, very, very happy that I finally have some of my own photos to share this time!! I have an outfit of the day, can you believe it?! I can’t even remember the last time I was able to get some decent outfit pictures. Actually.. it was probably the last time my friend Keni (Instagram: @kenifromtheblock) took pictures of me ha-ha. This outfit was based on layering, and mixing casual pieces with a piece that would be considered more formal. This printed drape-y vest was something I got on sale at Topshop last year and I always considered it as kind of a more dressier piece. To layer and make this vest look more casual, I added jeans, a distressed t-shirt, sneakers, and a leather jacket! I like how it turned out, and I’m glad I opted for green as a pop of colour. Normally, I would have been safe and gone with a neutral-coloured t-shirt BUT NOT THIS TIME ;D I know it’s not anything crazy. This is only a bit of an example of how I have been evolving in terms of style and taste. I can’t wait to show you guys more!

I hope you guys enjoyed this post. You guys have no idea how much I like to share my outfits and I’m gonna try my best to do it more. I’m currently thinking about doing an “Outfits of The Week” post. What do you guys think of that idea? Let me know in the comment section below!!

DIY Frayed-Hem Jeans

I’m here with something new and exciting! Like I’ve said in my previous post, I’ve been really motivated and determined lately. That means that I’m also motivated and determined to blog more and come up with some different content! In today’s post, I’m going to share with you a little do-it-yourself project that I did the other day. I DIY’d my own pair of frayed-hem jeans!

I got this sick pair of gray straight-leg jeans from work for $10. That’s right TEN DOLLARS. When I bought them they were waaay too long for me, but they fit perfectly around my waist! For $10, I racked my brain for an idea on how I could make them work. I mean, I could have got them hemmed for another $10 but who wants to do that?! Lol, not me!! I decided to hem them myself, and even better, I decided I wanted a FRAYED hem. We sell them at Topshop for almost $100. I love them and wanted them until I realized I could probably make them myself!! So I did and now here we are. Not only am I going to show you how they turned out, but I’m going to show you how I made them in case you guys want to try doing this yourselves! Here we go!

Things you’ll need:

dscn25311

  1. Jeans – you could use an old pair, or even thrift a pair!
  2. Scissors (preferably fabric scissors, but I lost mine..)
  3. Tweezers
  4. Pencil or Chalk
  5. Measuring Tape

Step One:

dscn25341

Lay out your jeans and measure them to your desired length. Then draw a line for yourself to follow while you cut! Keep in mind that you’re going to need an inch or so for the frayed part. Side note: It looks like I cut off three inches from the bottom of my jeans.. I ended up cutting an extra inch. #shortgirlproblems Also, you don’t NEED to measure it out, draw a line, etc. If you’re comfortable eye-balling it, by all means go for it!! It’ll probably look more natural if you do it that way. I’m just a neat freak.

Step Two:

dscn25391

If you’ve measured where you want to cut them, cut away! If you’re eye-balling it, cut away! *TIP: Try the jeans on after! See where they sit! If you want them shorter, measure it out and cut some more!

Step Three:

dscn25441

Take your measuring tape again and measure from the bottom of your jeans to where you’d like your fraying/fringe to start. I measured one and a quarter inch. Draw another line across then instead of cutting across, cut up towards that line and make even little strips. BE CAREFUL NOT TO DESTROY A SIDE SEAM. That may cause you problems in the future!

Step Four:

dscn25511dscn25531

Take a good and close look at one of those little strips. You’ll notice that there are threads going vertically and horizontally. This is how we’re going to make it fray. Loosen up the threads a bit with your fingers. Then take your tweezers and start to pull away all the horizontal/white threads until you each the end of the strip. We don’t want those guys! Do this to every strip all the way around the leg.

This is what it should look like once you’ve done a few strips:

dscn25611

And once you’ve finished all the strips on BOTH legs, this is what they’ll look like!! 🙂

dscn25701

I’m so happy with how these turned out. I hope you guys enjoyed this post! I had a lot of fun putting this together. If you’d like more DIYs, let me know in the comment section below!

Happy Tuesday!

Current Obsession: Eyeglasses

Hi everybody! Today’s post is all about my current obsession: eyeglasses. Not just any eyeglasses though. I am OBSESSED with these glasses that I got from Durumi http://www.instagram.com/thedurumi (a store downtown on Queen St). I just love these frames and every time I wear them to work I get so many compliments. They were only $25! They really add a bit of quirkiness to my outfits- and I love it.

img_4600

The funny part is that I actually have proper prescription eyeglasses but I choose to wear these non-prescription ones instead. Makes sense, right? If anyone knows, can you get prescription lenses put into cheap frames like these? I may just go to Lenscrafters and find out myself. Or maybe there’s even similar frames there that I can turn into prescription glasses!?! I’ll keep you all updated. Don’t worry.

— But that’s it for today, my friends! Sorry that it’s a bit short and sweet this time. *GOOD* NEWS though! For the first week of January, beginning on New Years Eve, I will be using my vacation time! That’s an entire week of me, myself, and blogging ;)) I can’t wait, CAN YOU?

Hope you all are having a fabulous weekend so far! Get that Christmas shopping done! (I’m saying this more for me than for you LOL)

Until next time,

  • A ❤

Blue Suede Shoes

Hi everyone! I’m back with a post that is all about one pair of shoes. If that doesn’t tell you how much I love them, I don’t know what else will ha-ha. These are my favourite shoes of Summer 2016. Why? Well, let me tell you.

Let me start off by saying that my feet are tiny. I have baby feet. I am lucky if a woman’s size 5 shoe fits me, and if that doesn’t fit, I usually buy the kid’s version. These gorgeous blue suede mules are from Topshop. If you guys don’t already know, I work there Full Time now. I’ve been an employee for almost two years and not once did I ever find a pair of shoes that fit me perfectly. Of course, I’ve bought shoes from Topshop before but I had to buy insoles to make them fit properly. The smallest shoe size that Topshop carries in Canada is typically a 5.5. When I saw these mules, they came in size 4.5! So obviously, I felt like I had to buy them because never again will this happen. Like I’m telling you, the fact that we had a pair in a size 4.5 is a HUGE rarity. So yeah, I bought them. Duh. And I love them. Double Duh.

I wear them with almost anything. You would assume that because they’re blue, which is not necessarily a neutral colour, they wouldn’t go with much. Like I’ve said, they actually go well with a lot. I love pairing them with denim. I love how they can make a boring outfit more fun. They’re a great little pop of colour and definitely different from the rest of the shoes in my closet. ALSO, they’re comfortable! I can do a full shift with these guys on and it will be bearable.

It’s sad that Summer has come to an end and I probably won’t wear them again for a while. But I hope you guys love these shoes as much as I do! If not, maybe you’ve enjoyed my passion for them? I am very passionate about these shoes and I can’t wait to wear them again next year.

Hope you guys are having a fabulous Monday!

Until next time,

– A ❤

Summer Suede

Hi friends! I’m baaack with another outfit post! This outfit consists of two things I’ve been currently loving, camel suede and that darn button up skirt! Are you sick of seeing it yet? I promise that I’m keeping it at two ha-ha! This one in particular is white, and also from Topshop. I picked white because I don’t have any bottoms in my closet that are white. I was considering getting pants but this skirt just seemed like the perfect choice. My top is from Zara and it’s real suede leather. It’s got that weird leather smell but I love the look and the texture that it brings to my outfit. What do you think? Take a look!!
